How we handle your data

Split PDF by Bookmarks

Split a PDF by bookmarks: turn each bookmark-defined section of a workflow pack into its own PDF for routing to the right reviewer, in one ZIP.

Two real chapter bookmarks start at pages 1 and 4. Splitting by bookmarks should produce two three-page PDFs.

Your documents stay on this device. Tool downloads and usage statistics do not include file contents.

Local limits: Max single file: 10 MB

A practical guide

Route bookmarked sections as separate files.

  1. Check that the PDF's top-level bookmarks mark the section starts.
  2. Run bookmark mode to split the document at those starts.
  3. Inspect the ZIP names, section boundaries and page sequence.

Try this example

In the six-page sample, top-level bookmarks begin chapters on pages 1 and 4. Expect sections 1-3 and 4-6 in the ZIP; confirm each range before routing them.

Before

  • Chapter 1
  • Chapter 2

After

  • Chapter 1.pdf
  • Chapter 2.pdf
Input and expected output for this task. Illustrative example.

Before you start: Only PDF outline bookmarks define boundaries; printed headings do not. Review the ZIP before sharing.

Combine chosen chapters
What you get

Split a PDF at its supported top-level bookmarks. The result is a ZIP with one PDF for each chapter; PDFs without supported bookmarks cannot be split this way.

Limits and important details

One PDF. Up to 200 bookmarks, 4 levels deep, titles up to 200 characters. Existing bookmarks are replaced.

Example

Use the six-page sample PDF with top-level chapter bookmarks at pages 1 and 4. Split in bookmark mode, then inspect the ZIP: the chapter PDFs should cover pages 1-3 and 4-6. This follows PDF bookmarks, not headings detected in page text.
